Tuesday - Day 2

Group members take turns each day to cook and wash up in the kitchen. Danny demonstrates why dishwasher manufacturers have nothing to fear from him.

Today's task was clearing campground spaces.

Nancy asked Danny what he would like lopped off.

Danny decided to stage a local Highland Games event with his speciality being tossing the caber.

John indicating where the group should place their loads.

Other members of the group stacked piles of brushwood for later burning while Lisa shows off her strength by carrying tree trunks.

Some time ago this tree crashed to earth narrowly missing a picnic table. No one was around when it fell so, of course, it didn't make a sound.

Many things can bring down a tree including these grubs which riddled this tree with holes.

Chainsaw being used on another fallen tree.

Video of tree being cut down (with added slow-motion)

After we finished clearing up we were shown one of the centre's restrooms with environmentally-friendly features.

We were then shown the main centre building. In the bottom image you can see the holes in the paving blocks used by chipmunks.

Inside we were shown the floor which is made from recycled used tires.

And the ceiling which is made from recycled paper.

Craig, Linda and Paul have fun with the stuffed animals. Whose expression is most animal-like?

We were then shown the environmentally-friendly toilets which feed into a processor in the basement which combines woodchips with thousands of worms to process the waste. There was an amazing lack of odour in the room.

In the basement Nancy found this figure and got it to do the 'Cape Cod Wave'

Impressive hall in the centre.

A whalebone and a model of an osprey nest are on display.

Nancy and Mary admire a wild children's rug while Paul admires the wild turkeys.

Two excellent window displays with the lower showing squirrel-proof bird feeders.

At the end of the hall are a range of aquariums.

The group pause for a photos before moving on to the next task.

For this task we don protective clothing, hats, gloves and goggles before burning brushwood.

Intrepid firefighters are given a safety briefing before commencing their work.

Using flammable liquid to start the fire.

One of the workers sprays water around the brushwood pile to limit the spread of the fire.

John, suspiciously enthusiastic when working with fire!

Even at a safe distance from the fire the heat was tremendous and the flames took on a living quality.

Firefighter controlling the fire's spread while other groups keep watch in case their fire spreads.

As one worker dampens down the fire other group members feed another flaming pile.

When Nancy saw John without his hard hat she informed him "You're fired!"

Gary strikes a heroic pose.

Firefighters completing their work.

The group take a well-earned break while the chef gets cooking in the kitchen.

When Danny complained about his workload Nancy told him "if you can't stand the heat..."
